Join us at WPPI 2010

This year’s WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) tradeshow and convention, is looking to be better than ever. Make plans to join us this year in the world’s leading forum for wedding and portrait photographers at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Monday, March 8th-Wednesday March 10th.

We will be running ongoing demos each day throughout the show, we will have some great Photoflex® prizes to win, and we will, of course, have staff and professional photographers on hand ready to answer any questions you may have.

Our booth will be hosting 4 different speakers, most of which will be sharing their insights and experience on the main stage, as well:

Jay P. Morgan, a keynote speaker, will be discussing the possibilities of DSLR and the upcoming role of HD Video on the photography set.
Billy Pegram will be featuring a make-up artist, and demonstrating how to take portfolio shots that will stand out.
Brianna Graham will be stopping by our booth to inspire you to find your own unique, and marketable, approach to photography.
Marissa Lopez Donatt will demonstrate creative lighting solutions using her fine art flair. (Marissa’s demos will be in both English and Spanish)
Our own Norm Haughey will also be sharing his special knowledge of posing, lighting and much more.

We like Ian Spanier. He has been a long time friend of Photoflex®, and has agreed to come on board as a contributing WebPhotoSchool® lesson writer. So stay tuned, and we’re sure that you’ll like Ian, too.

Ian Spanier was born in Connecticut, raised in Westchester, New York. Spanier’s interest in photography began at age six when he received his first camera. Currently he resides in New York City, and is available for assignment in New York, California, and any other location accessible by plane, train, car, horse, camel, or mule.

WATSONVILLE, CA: Jay P. Morgan is one of the greatest commercial photographer/ videographers in America. He has over 25 years experience and works daily with a client list most photographers only dream about. Photoflex, Inc. has worked with Jay P. for over two decades and is thrilled to announce their partnership with him to produce this DVD.

This tutorial, The Slanted Lens, vol. 1, is probably the most entertaining photo education DVD ever created. You’ll laugh out loud at the crazy antics going on in the background while Jay P. does a masterful job of making the complicated digital SLR camera systems very easy to understand and use.

In helpful, easy demonstrations, using examples from his own portfolio, Jay P. will explain how to set up your camera’s menu for color balance, stop action, depth of field, and HD video. You’ll also learn great tips on several different basic lighting concepts that he uses to create his seemingly “impossible photos.”

Jasmine Star Photography

Wedding season is winding down, and Orange County based Jasmine Star has been busy. Not surprising considering her work. Check out some of her pictures on her blog, they truly do justice to these special events.
We only just recently discovered her, and we want to do our part to show off her work. So all of you check out her amazing wedding photography, and see why she was voted a Top 10 Wedding Photographer for 2009.
We also like that she is on top of answering questions from her fans about her work. You should all see what she has to say about her lighting…you may find some familiar stuff ;) She also puts on some amazing workshops, so if we hear anything, we’ll be sure to pass it along.

Shoe Mount Kits - The New Photoflex® Lineup

These kits have been a huge success this year, but we wanted to make sure everyone knows what it is these kits actually can do for you. We’ve taken our entire lineup of Shoe Mount Flash kits, given them a little makeover, and made them as easy as possible to compare, visualize and purchase HERE.

For those of you out there who, like me (until only a few days ago), are a little unclear about what the shoe mount flash kit can actually do, I’m gonna attempt to clear things up, because these kits are really a lot cooler than they may sound. At first, I was thinking, “What could shoes have to do with lighting.” I’m only slightly kidding here. Either way, I was way off. Fortunately, I have knowledgeable colleagues who set me straight. Now I’d like to pass on the valuable tidbits I’ve been gathering.

What it is:

The Shoe Mount Flash is the standard removable On-Camera Flash found on SLR and DSLR cameras. Our Mount Adapter (comes with all these kits, or sold separately) allows you to maximize the light output of your flash, by allowing the attachment of some of our popular SoftBoxes.

What it does:

By attaching our mount adapter to your Shoe Mount Flash, you can attach a softbox to diffuse what is usually a harsh light, and most importantly, move it off your camera. Camera flashes usually light the subject directly in line with the camera, creating flat images and unnatural highlights. Moving it off your camera instantly fixes this problem. If you don’t already have one, this option does require a sync cable or radio slave (sold elsewhere), but this option will really open up your lighting options. For well researched information on these kinds of setups, check in with Ed Zawadzki, who put together a nice summary on his blog a while back.

You can also keep the flash moving with you by attaching it, and its SoftBox, to a camera bracket. This method is ideal for photographers who are moving around a lot, like wedding photographers.

The bottom line:

These kits have something for everyone. They are economical, use what you probably already have sitting in your camera bags, and are easy to take with you on location or use while maneuvering in cramped studio spaces.

Make sure you check them out.
