Never too young for some dramatic light
Recently, our friend and Pro Showcase photographer Matt Brandon did a photo shoot for his friends who are the proud parents of newborn Anna Sophia. Matt shot her at only two days old, in a new classic pose: a shot of the baby in the father’s hand.
The images were shot with a Photoflex LiteDome xs Kit, a Pocket Wizard, two Canon Speed Light 580X II and a black cloth backdrop. Of course, one strobe wasn’t working so Matt improvised with the one main light and got these amazing shots!
“I had my wife hold the LiteDome and strobe as close as possible to the baby for as soft a light as I could get. Remember, there is light source and light origin. The origin might be the sun and the source could be the clouds or maybe a reflector. In this case the origin is the flash unit and the LiteDome becomes the source. The closer the source is to the object, the softer the light. This seems counter intuitive but it is true. Of course the closer you get to the object, in this case the baby, they less power you need, so I needed to dial down my flash. For these shots I use my 85 1.8.”
Here are some of the results:
Then, to Matt’s surprise, the family asked him to take a portrait of all 7 of them! So, he obliged…but with only a LiteDome xs, his light source was smaller than desirable for a portrait of a group. However, Matt nailed it as only pros know how to do!

And between March 23-29 be sure to take advantage of special pricing on the Photoflex LiteDome xs Kit.

Matt, they sure messed up when they used the shot they did on the cover- cause that lighting isn’t very good. The next shot however is very good. And I know what it’s like when equipment fails on you. Maybe they didn’t use the second shot because the babies giving you the finger. That’s funny! Hope you guys are doing well, I’m off to Peru April 8th. Pray for me. Keith
Oh ya, I’m I ever going to be your friend? You punk. Talked with Chase yesterday and reminesced (to lazy to look spelling on that) about our hotel in Singapore. Good times.
